about

An attempt to blend prehispanic sounds with the sonic environment of the mangrove of the Laguna Bacalar in Quintanaroo, Mexico. Recorded in March 2022 at the shore of the Bacalar ecological parc during a residency of General Humanity at the independent art space Galeon Pirata.

A tree spreading its branches wide out into the water, giving shelter to birds and humans. I sat perching on its branches for a long time, listening, trying to soothe the birds over my presence. On a spot of green grass on the shore nearby I then layed out a selection of ocarinas and flutes made of clay that my friend Rafael models after prehispanic originals. I started my recording session with the sound of birds and of the waves gently hitting the shore (track 1). I then started to play single ocarina, uttering calls in response to those heard and from there developed personal „bird song“ variations (track 2). (Bird song, in contrast to bird call for danger or mating, reflects a bird’s individual art of singing). The following tracks conjoin the rhytmic sound of the water hitting the shore with me playing a globular ocarina featuring a gentle, fullbodied sound (track 3) and explore repetitive melody employing a single flute and overblowing multiphonics (track 4). Track 4 is the most „anthropo-sonic“ of all, building up into a stomping rhythm and calming down again. The final track is an instant composition with two flutes blown simultaneously (but not synchronously) playing with the acoustic phenomenon of difference tones or deep humming tones generated when two close-by tones (usually in the high-pitch range) resound togeher. Difficult to capture in an ambient recording, the humming did not get through, but the visceral vibration, the friction beween sounds, did. The album ebbs out with wave sound, connecting back to its beginning.

Gratitude to the mangrove of the Laguna Bacalar for admitting me to its fragile ecosystem. Thanks to Rafael Andrade Hernandez for allowing me to play the prehispanic instruments he models out of clay after prehispanic originals using traditional, completely manual techniques. Thanks to Abraham Juarez for letting me use his sound equipment.

Recorded on 14 March 2022 at the shore of the Laguna Bacalar, Mexico; postproducion in San Pedro la Laguna, Guatemala, in April 2022.
