about

Divine Noise (Teotzotzona in Nahuatl meaning Divine Callings) is a concept taken from research on animal musicians in Ancient Egypt, where the „unbearable noise“ made by apes and other animals shown on depictions playing string and wind instruments is characterized as „divine noise“, not destined to please human ears but to invoke the gods, as a mode to connect to the divine world; the idea behind this project was to reach this connection through a collective sound ritual, with a slow progression from natural sounds (water, leaves, birds) to primal human sounds (guttural chant, body percussion) to chant and percussion and, finally, to dissonant drone sounds on flutes and ocarinas. The ritual started with applying body paint and invocating the six corners of the world through the blowing oft the shell trumpet and the burning of incense, and ended with the sharing of water, and silence. Through smoke, hyperventilation and „difference tones“ (the difference between two close high pitch notes sounding as a low frequency) we aimed to create a state of sonic excess where the noise at the limit of the endurable dilutes our mind towards an oceanic sense of connectedness with the (divine) world.
